18th March 2021

Dear Parent/Carer,

HT’s Messages – Thursday 18 March 2021

I start today’s letter with the excellent news of the results for our vocational exams for BTEC Sport Science and Business Studies which students undertook earlier in January. Despite the unique challenges of this year, I am very pleased to say that 75% of our students received a distinction and everyone else received a merit. The students have done themselves proud, laying an excellent foundation for their final outcome.

Lateral Flow Testing – Student Home Test Kits

Tomorrow, Years 7, 8 and 9 students for whom we received consent, including those who tested positive in the last 90 days, will be given two home test kits to start using twice weekly from this week until then Easter holidays. We are expecting further kits to be delivered shortly to allow testing to continue over the Easter break.

The self test kits are for your child’s use only. If your child tested positive in the last 90 days, they should not start testing until the 90 days has passed.

We advise for all year groups that students complete their self-tests on Sunday and Wednesday evenings and results will need to be reported online through the Government/NHS website (details are in the leaflet with the test kit). The school does not need to be made aware of negative test results of the Lateral Flow Test. In the event your child’s result is positive, please email admin@sns.hackney.sch.uk as soon as possible. Your child will then need to take a confirmatory PCR test and they must remain at home (along with the rest of the household) until the result of the PCR is received. Please do keep the school updated on the outcome of the PCR test.

Please find attached additional guidance and a helpful instruction video in how to take the test can be found here.

As the week goes on, we will be distributing the home test kits as per the schedule below.

The self-test kits are for your child’s use only. If you have not consented to on site lateral flow testing or did not respond to the consent form, your child will not be given a home test kit. If you do wish to have one, please email admin@sns.hackney.sch.uk

Lateral Flow Testing – Household Home Test Kits

From my previous letter, please see a link here with the collection sites available to collect home test kits for your household. The map will only show sites that are currently open and is updated regularly throughout the day.

Tests are fast, easy and completely free. There are different ways for a household, childcare or support bubble to collect their test to take at home, twice-weekly:

  • Through your employer, if they offer testing to employees
  • By collecting a home test kit from a local test site – anyone aged 18 or over can collect 2 packs of 7 tests
  • by ordering a home test kit online – please do not order online if you can access testing through other routes, this frees up home delivery for those who need it most.

Community Safety

Unfortunately, we have been alerted to recent street robberies in the local area and Clissold Park. As our young people return to travelling to and from school, we must remind them of community safety guidelines, to use main roads, to walk home in groups where possible and to be vigilant. A reminder that students are not permitted to bring their mobile phones to school, unless their Head of School has granted permission for exceptional medical and social reasons.

We expect students to be the best of ambassadors of our school and they are to be courteous and polite and adhere to social distancing protocols when in the local community. As they make their way to and from school, they must be considerate to other road users and ensure they are wearing their face masks on public transport.

Uniform Expectations

Students must be in full school uniform which includes their lanyard, face mask and proper school shoes.

From Monday 22nd March, all Year 9 students will no longer be permitted to arrive in school in their PE kit and will instead revert to the old method of changing before and after each lesson.

As I end today’s letter and we move towards more hopeful times, I am reminded of David Hockney’s poignant and positive message of hope sent this time last year whilst in lockdown in Normandy, France.
