Design Technology at KS3 offers students a creative and practical introduction to designing and making across a range of material areas

Design and Technology at Key Stage 3

Year 7

In Year 7, students complete two main projects; in Textiles, they design and make a soft toy using a variety of hand-sewing techniques. In Product Design, they create a wind turbine made from reused materials, encouraging sustainable design thinking.

There is also a Graphics extension project, where students develop branding and packaging for their textile toy. In Food Technology, students will have an opportunity to experience practical cooking by creating a simple dish.

All Year 7 projects follow the full design process — from research and idea generation through to design development and prototype making — helping students build creativity, problem-solving skills, and confidence.

Year 8

In Year 8, students build on these foundations by completing five short projects across a variety of specialisms. These projects are completed on rotation over the school year. The projects include:

  • Textiles – designing and making a bag using printing and dyeing techniques, and learning to use the sewing machine.
  • Graphics – creating branding for a cereal product, with a focus on typography and using the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Product Design – Biomimicry - taking inspiration from nature to influence innovative design ideas.
  • Product Design – Architecture – completing a modelling project that introduces architectural principles and model-making skills.
  • Food Technology – developing practical cooking skills, understanding food safety, and learning about nutrition.

Each project lasts approximately eight weeks, and students rotate between specialist teachers, giving them a broad and inspiring experience of the different areas within Design Technology.
